Editorial: Departments
Good
This front-of-book department is where Good Taste, Good Health and Good Life come together. The emphasis is on the triangle formed by food, its origins and human health. Good is full of quick takeaways on the latest food news, seasonal recommendations, movie and book reviews, facts about food, the environment, health and nutrition, plus lifestyle. Regular components include Good Questions (a timely interview with a well-known person in a food- or health-related field), Green Eating (interesting information on environmental impacts), Local Hero (a profile of an individual making a real difference in their community) and See It, Make It, featuring recipes so simple they can be easily followed by just looking at the photos. The Good Health pages bring you News to Live By, addressing timely topics with a service-based slant that cuts through the hype. Additional regular features include Ask Brierley, for nutrition-related questions answered by our nutrition editor Brierley Wright, a Registered Dietitian, and Fresh Findings, where our experts respond to questions and comment on the latest research developments.
Healthy in a Hurry
Our largest department (and the title of one of our popular cookbooks), Healthy in a Hurry puts simple solutions for weeknight meals in one handy section. Weeknights provides easy solutions for dinner Monday through Friday. Fresh Picks showcases a different vegetable (and sometimes a fruit) in each issue and aims to educate about its nutritional content, when to buy and where to shop, along with quick preparation tips. In 4 Ways we are inspired to use a particular ingredient four different ways for four fast dinners. Occasional one-page departments in this section include Salad Days and Sweet Treat.
From Our Test Kitchen
Our last department offers the useful Techniques and Tips & Notes, with how-tos such as how to butterfly a whole chicken or how to prepare beef stock. We answer questions like What’s a healthy way to fry? or What should I look for when buying a pressure cooker? This department is our very own cooking school, where expert advice on buying food, appliances, cookware, kitchen tools and cookbooks is shared with our readers.
Recipe Index
An everyday tool for readers, our Recipe Index is a complete listing of all the issue’s recipes, with special nutrition icons and detailed counts of calories, fats, carbs, fiber and sodium. This popular page appears very far forward in the magazine, following the Contents page.
Nourish
How does food nourish you in unexpected ways? That’s the question this essay examines. The column features literary essays by nationally acclaimed authors, such as Bill McKibben and Sue Halpern, Laura Fraser, Scott Russell Sanders and Barbara and Camille Kingsolver.
